Weight loss surgery effective, but risk remains
They looked at 164 randomized clinical trials and observational studies that included, but were not limited to, the three most common bariatric procedures: gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding and sleeve gastrectomy. Across all procedures, the mortality was eight deaths out of 10,000 patients within 30 days of surgery. This mortality increased to 31 deaths out of 10,000 patients after 30 days, based on the data from the randomized clinical trials. The rate of any type of complication ranged from 10 to 17 percent, with gastric bypass having more complications but also more effective weight loss. Patients who underwent adjustable gastric banding lost comparatively less weight and were more likely to require another operation to fix problems such as band erosion. Despite requiring more follow-up operations, gastric banding had lower death and garcinia cambogia complication rates. Looking at the 11 studies that reported data five years after surgery, the researchers calculated that study participants maintained a 12 to 17 point reduction in body mass index (BMI).

Melatonin May Aid Weight Loss
“Mean total cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol were reduced regardless of the amount of weight lost,” wrote Cynthia A. Thomson, PhD, RD, of the University of Arizona and her co-authors in the Journal of the American Heart Association. “Generally, the higher the baseline biomarker values, the greater was the reduction with weight loss,” the authors said. Step-test performance, a secondary outcome, also improved in women who lost 10% of their starting body weight, though this change was not associated with a change in cardiometabolic risk factors. The study included 417 women over 18 who had a BMI between 25 and 40 kg/m2 and were at least 15 kg above their ideal body weight as defined by the 1983 Metropolitan Life tables.

Half of the rats (both obese and normal weight) were given melatonin in their drinking water every day for six weeks, while the remaining rats were given no supplemental melatonin. At the end of the six-week period, rats that received the oral melatonin displayed increased presence of beige fat — this included both obese and lean rats. Researchers found that the rats who received melatonin had increased their sensitivity to the thermogenic effects of both cold and exercise.
